Government's failure to pay Tier 2 pensions has infuriated teachers.

According to four teacher unions, the Ghana Education Service (GES) Occupational Pension Scheme has not been funded by the government as of yet (Tier 2).

The unions include the Tertiary Educational Workers Union, the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, the National Association of Graduate Teachers, and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) (TEWU).

The unions claim that even though the government deducts these payments from their salary each month, there are approximately GH400 million in unpaid contributions as of the last payment in March 2022.

Speaking to Citi News on behalf of the four unions, Mark Dankyira Korankye, the general secretary of TEWU, expressed the four unions' displeasure: "We have filed multiple letters to the regulator, requesting that they guarantee that the employer pays the payments as soon as they are withheld. Unfortunately, it looks that the regulator is powerless, thus we must release this declaration right away.

"As a starting step, we're suggesting the regulator's allowances or charge owed to them must likewise not be paid if it's not doing its job," the group said. I believe they will be forced to request that the government pay the regular employee's due pensions if they are not receiving their fee.
