The Implementation Common Core Programme (CCP) Does Not Replace the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) as the Mode of Assessment.

The Ministry of Education Ghana has clarified that the implementation of the Common Core Programme in schools does not replace the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) as the mode of assessment for students, and that, The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) remains the mode of assessment for
students who have completed the programme.

This clarification comes after a meeting was held on the 13th February,2023 between the Minister for Education and leadership of the various Private Schools Councils and Associations, to discuss issues affecting the smooth running of Private Sector Education. During the meeting, concerns were raised about the implementation of the Common Core Programme and its impact on students in private schools. There have been some
misunderstandings regarding the assessment of students in the Common Core Programme.

In responding to the concerns, the Minister reiterated and assured all stakeholders that the implementation of the Common Core Programme is necessary to ensure that students receive a comprehensive education that prepares them for the demands of the 21st century, to provide students with a more holistic education that develops their critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.

The BECE, on the other hand, remains the primary mode of assessment for students in Ghana. It is a nationally recognized examination that assesses the academic progress of students in the third year of Junior High School.

Therefore, the implementation of the Common Core Programme does not affect the BECE. Students will still be required to sit for the BECE at the end of their third year in Junior High School, and their results will determine their progression to Senior High School.

The Ministry of Education encourages all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and students, to support the implementation of the Common Core Programme and work towards improving the quality of education in Ghana.

The Ministry is committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the
Common Core Programme. We encourage private schools to continue to provide quality education to their students and to work with the Ministry to identify areas where improvements can be made.

In conclusion, we thank the Private Schools Councils and Association for their efforts to discuss the implementation of the Common Core Programme. We look forward to continued collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure the success of the programme and the education of Ghanaian students.

This Press Statement or Communique was dated on the 24th of February 2023 and signed by Obenfo Enoch Kwasi Gyetuah, The National Executive Director of Ghana National Council of Private Schools.
